Technical Writer

Job Purpose:
To support NIST OWM’s technical analysis and evaluation of results from the impending cannabis RFI. An analysis of and comparisons with current methodologies and standards applied to the analysis of cannabis. Additionally, the project shall include technical writing to support NIST OWM staff’s development of technical guidance and legal metrology documentary standards (e.g., NIST Handbooks) and another other written test procedures for cannabis and cannabis-containing products. *This is a temporary, 3 month opportunity

  • Compile, organize, analyze all received information from the cannabis RFI
  • Design spreadsheet(s) to compile and organize all information and then conduct data analysis for all the information that is gathered through the RFI with assistance of other NIST experts.
  • Provide an analysis and a written summary of all information received by the RFI including the stakeholder association(s) and/or representative sector(s), any relevant background, and a summary of the key and prioritized issues as well as present the information in a logical structure according to the questions posed.
  • Collaborate with the NIST OWM Technical Staff in the development of the cannabis-related standards, test procedures, and any other written technical guidance documents that will be intended to provide technical guidance to weights and measures officials, industry, and the general public to facilitate the uniform adoption and implementation of legal metrology standards for cannabis and cannabis-containing products in the U.S.
  • Draft the initial language of cannabis-related standards as informed by the key and prioritized issues identified.  
  • Participate in NIST OWM team meetings to assist in the preparation of the standards and any other written NIST OWM technical analyses related to the cannabis RFI.
  • Review and provide comments and recommendation on draft technical documents prepared by NIST OWM staff.

Education and Experience:
  • Master’s degree in physical science or engineering (including, but not limited to, biological chemistry, (bio)chemistry, natural products or pharmaceutical-related fields)
  • 5 years’ demonstrated experience in the production of technical reports, journals, articles or other written technical dissemination work products
  • Experience with development of documentary (written) standards, test procedures, standard operating procedures, etc.
