Law Clerk II
Job Purpose:
The Law Clerk II provides substantive legal research, analysis, drafting, and litigation support to attorneys handling complex civil and criminal matters. This position assists with evaluating applicable laws and regulations, researching legal issues, preparing written legal work products, and supporting case management activities. The Law Clerk II will work closely with assigned attorneys to ensure legal matters are thoroughly researched, documented, and tracked in accordance with applicable requirements and deadlines.

This position assists with evaluating applicable laws and regulations, researching legal issues, preparing written legal work products, and supporting case management activities. The Law Clerk II will work closely with assigned attorneys to ensure legal matters are thoroughly researched, documented, and tracked in accordance with applicable requirements and deadlines.
Responsibilities
- Conduct comprehensive legal research involving federal, state, and local laws, regulations, statutes, judicial precedents, and administrative requirements.
- Analyze statutes, legislative intent, judicial decisions, agency rules and regulations, and other legal authorities, including matters that may be complex or unprecedented.
- Work closely with assigned attorneys to identify applicable laws and potential defenses, violations, or causes of action.
- Research and analyze issues related to civil and criminal litigation.
- Remain current on applicable civil and criminal rules, procedures, and legal developments.
- Review, analyze, and interpret case and program data and alert attorneys to potential legal or procedural issues.
- Brief attorneys on relevant facts, legal issues, case law, and research findings.
- Draft legal memoranda, briefs, correspondence, responses, and other legal documents for attorney review and signature.
- Assist with litigation-related case preparation, research, documentation, and administrative requirements.
- Support docketing, calendaring, case tracking, and management of critical deadlines.
- Organize and maintain accurate case-related information and legal work products.
- Exercise sound judgment and respond appropriately to unexpected developments and time-sensitive assignments.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Education and Experience:
- Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree from an accredited law school required.
- Minimum of two (2) years of professional litigation work experience required.
- Working knowledge of the Federal Rules of Civil and Criminal Procedure required.
- Must be able to obtain and maintain the required High-Risk Public Trust suitability determination.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications.
- Strong legal research, analytical, writing, and communication skills.
- Ability to make responsible decisions on short notice and adapt to unexpected developments.
- Must reside within, or be willing to relocate to, the commuting area of San Diego, California before beginning employment.
- Active state bar admission is preferred.
- Previous federal litigation support experience is preferred.
- Experience supporting immigration-related litigation, including Habeas Corpus and Denaturalization matters, is highly desirable.
- Experience with legal case management and litigation-support platforms such as CaseView, Relativity, or Eclipse is preferred.
