Gaithersburg, MD
Job Purpose:
This project’s purpose is to identify relevant metrics related to the performance of 3-D printed concrete objects and develop material or system-level tests to monitor these metrics during additive manufacturing operations.

  • Conduct a review of the scientific literature to identify material properties and printing parameters that may influence the printing system’s ability to produce desired objects.
  • Use the literature review to develop an experimental plan to test the printing performance of NIST’s mortar 3-D printer
  • Conduct 3-D printing trials using NIST’s mortar 3-D printer located in the Additive Construction Laboratory.  The trail prints will be informed by task 1 and 2 and be designed to study the performance of the mortar printer while varying material properties and printing parameters.
  • Report findings to NIST MSSD Infrastructure Material Group and interface with other members of the Additive Manufacturing with Cement-based Materials project to refine the experimental program and integrate other 3-D concrete printing research efforts into the mortar 3-D printing tests.

Education and Experience:
  • Ph.D. degree in Civil/Mechanical/Chemical Engineering or related field
  • 2 years experience in academic research related to cementitious materials and additive manufacturing
  • Demonstrated research experience in understanding the physiochemical and mechanical behavior of cementitious materials
  • Experience operating scientific equipment to characterize cementitious materials, rheology, and mechanical properties
  • Experience in academic research related to the characterization of nanomaterials, i.e., nanoclays, silica nanoparticles, graphene, multi-wall carbon nanontudes, and their influence on cementitious material performance.
  • Design, fabrication, and testing of reinforced concrete structures.
  • Demonstrated publication record in peer-reviewed journals
  • Experience as a principal contributor of complex technical efforts.
  • Record of noteworthy publications and talks.
